The Neck

Description
The Neck connecting North and South Bruny
Island, is a sand isthmus that separates
the ocean environment of Adventure Bay
from the sheltered waters of Simpsons Bay.
Little penguins and Short Tailed Shearwaters
(mutton birds) share the same nesting area,
an unusual situation. Penguins are year
round residents whilst Mutton birds migrate
between Tasmania and Siberia.
Evening guided viewings at the little
penguin and mutton bird rookeries are a
popular summer activity.
The Neck also has a resident pair of Peregrine
Falcons and is home to a range of shorebirds
and waders. Unfortunately, it also has feral
cats and a large population of starlings.
The cats prey on the chicks of nesting birds.
Trapping regimes over recent years has
significantly reduced cat numbers, but
they remain a threat.
The Neck is a popular tourist stop off.

Channel area available from Truganini lookout.
Truganini was the daughter of Mangana an elder
the Nuenonnee people, the original inhabitants
of Bruny Is. They called their home
Lunnawaunna-Allonnaa.
