If there is one word I’d use to describe our workshop, it would be Respect!

Jason Smith from patrula nayri (FIRE GOOD) is working with land managers at Fairyland to reintroduce cultural burning into the landscape.

With Matt Taylor from Ecotec Environmental and Daniel Barnett from Mobile Island Haul, they are gradually and respectfully reducing the fire risk to allow for cool, patchwork burning.

Counterintuitively, where thick understorey occurs, they are trialling Daniel’s mulching machine to mulch the vegetation. This mulch layer then composts, allowing regrowth that may be burnt in a couple of years to reintroduce a sustaiable burning regime.

BJ Murphy and Jasmine Louise made this short video of the day.
