Revegtating old pine plantations is difficult.
Radiata pines just love to grow here in Tasmania.
Interestingly, in California, where they are native, they occupy only a small restricted habitat, but here, they spread like wild fire.
Riq de Carvalho and his recently dearly departed partner Kati, bought part of the old soldier-settlement pine plantation around the turn of the century, with the intent of rehabilitating it back to native vegetation.
Now, over 20 years later, after multiple harvest and mulching operations, this dream is coming true.
“Kati would have loved to be here for this” Riq commented yesterday as three of us hacked through the pine mulch and bracken roots to prep for planting.
Volunteers are sought for Saturday 4 July when some 800 plants will be lovingly planted and caged to start the growth stage of the restoration.
Come along and be part of this positive reversal of habitat behind the beach at 933 Cloudy Bay Rd.
